When you start to work out how to get on the web, it can be intimidating and we understand that because we were once there ourselves! However, the good news is that it isn’t that hard, particularly when you have a group of experts handling things for you.
There are three main areas you need to address:
- Domain name – provides the name people use to get to your website, ie www.domainname.com.au
- Web Hosting – puts your web pages and email on the internet so people can see your website and you can send and receive emails
- Web Pages – the web pages themselves, including text, images and layout (graphics)
The first area is your Domain name. Your domain name is the bit after the “www.” in a web address, that is, for www.yourdomainname.com.au the domain name is “yourdomainname.com.au”. Ideally, your domain name should be short, memorable, and represent your business well. If your business name is long, you may use shortcuts or an acronym. It can be hard to find a good domain name ending in .com but what you want is usually available under .com.au and it turns out that com.au is the most common domain name ending for Australian businesses these days. When you get a domain name you are actually leasing it for an annual or bi-annual registration fee. Talk to our staff for help in selecting the most appropriate available domain name for your business; if possible, we recommend you choose a domain name as part of the naming process for your business to be sure a good name is available for use, as many of the good names are already taken.
The second area is the Web Hosting. Webhosting is where we put your website up on the internet and make it possible for people to view it in their web browsers or send you email. This is usually done by assigning you some space on a server in a datacentre supplied with several independent internet connections, special power and cooling, and technicians onsite 24x7 just in case a problem occurs. Some of the extra things we provide to ensure your website is available for your visitors to view are: security monitoring, very thorough backups, anti-spam measures, and a comprehensive control panel (called cPanel) which allows you to control all aspects of your webhosting yourself. Although you’d probably think all webhosting is the same, there are many different grades of web hosting and the cheaper providers take many shortcuts which can cause problems down the track. The majority of our customers come to us after being disappointed by their previous hosting providers as they realise the importance of reliability.
The third and final area is your Web Pages. Getting webpages designed and put on your site can be one of the more expensive parts of getting a website up and running, and now that you have both a domain name and webhosting, it’s the next thing you need to do. The options vary between doing your webpages yourself using professional software, through using a web-based sitebuilder to put your site together, to getting someone to do it for you. White Dog Green Frog have a complete web design and development team and can handle development for sites of any size. We understand that getting a small business set up can be expensive and so we offer a variety of web development options to help you get up running quickly; we can also develop professional websites with custom-designed software implementations. Although you should keep in mind that you get what you pay for, if you don’t mind sacrificing a little quality you can start quite cheaply for a small website. On the other hand, you might want a quality website developed to give your customers a fantastic impression and to automate your sales process as much as possible. Check out the options on our web development page and/or contact us to have a chat about what would work best for you!
